Dr Shraddha Deshpande, Consultant Plastic Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central said that while many people opt for breast implants to improve their appearance or self-confidence, these can sometimes lead to long-term problems. “Back, neck and chest pain are common, especially with larger implants that add extra weight to the body’s natural structure. Over time, this added weight can strain the shoulders, cause posture problems and lead to constant discomfort. In some cases, breast pain can result from nerve irritation, tissue inflammation, or the tightening of scar tissue around the implant, a condition known as capsular contracture,” said Dr. Deshpande.
Chopra’s symptoms seem to match those experienced by many people with oversized implants, Dr. Deshpande said. “When implants are too large for one’s body size, the spine and shoulder muscles have to work harder to support the extra weight. This can lead to constant pain, stiffness, or even nerve pain. Sometimes, pain can also result from the implants shifting or the formation of internal scar tissue, which puts pressure on nearby nerves and tissues,” Drsh said. Depends.
Can surgery correct such implant-related problems?
Yes, confirmed Dr. Deshpande, adding that many people find relief through corrective surgery, including removal, reduction or replacement of the implant. “These procedures can help restore natural posture, reduce pressure on the chest and back, and reduce chronic pain. Once the implants are removed or resized, the body often begins to realign and symptoms usually improve with proper rest and rehabilitation,” said Dr. Deshpande.
What should people consider before choosing implants?
The most important factor is to understand your body and choose sizes that feel natural. “Decisions about implant size, material and placement should be made carefully, focusing on comfort and long-term health rather than trends. Regular monitoring through scans and awareness of any unusual pain, tightness or changes in shape are essential to early management of complications,” said Dr Deshpande.

Postoperative care
Good posture, regular stretching, and strengthening exercises for the back and shoulders can help reduce strain, Dr. Deshpande advised. “Supportive underwear and mindful body movements are also important. Ultimately, the goal of any body enhancement should be to boost confidence without compromising health, where beauty and wellness go hand in hand.”
