A mum unwittingly underwent a £9k tummy tuck while pregnant after her tests came back negative.
Gemma Williams, 42, had been saving up for a tummy tuck – commonly known as a tummy tuck – after years of feeling self-conscious about the ‘sagging pouches’ in her stomach as a result of giving birth to her three children, aged 14, 17 and 20.
For peace of mind, she chose to have the procedure done in the UK and looked for a reputable private hospital in Swansea, Wales.

On August 15, 2024, Gemma arrived at the clinic for surgery, where medical staff took a urine sample to check her health but “didn’t find anything” of concern, she claims.
After the four-hour operation, Gemma was discharged the following day and began her recovery at home.
In the following months, he experienced symptoms such as “bloating” and “nausea”, which he attributed to the “side effects” of the operation.
In December 2024, during her first shift as a new nurse at Swansea’s Singleton Hospital, a colleague noticed her discomfort and suggested that Gemma might be ‘pregnant’.

This observation led Gemma to take a pregnancy test and she was “beyond shocked” when it came back positive.
An ultrasound two days later, at the same hospital, confirmed that she was already 21 weeks pregnant.
Gemma suspects her pre-surgery urine test failed to detect her pregnancy due to a false negative, likely caused by low levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) – a hormone produced during pregnancy that can be measured in blood and urine to confirm and monitor a pregnancy.
After what she described as a “normal” pregnancy, her son, who Gemma prefers not to name, arrived on May 2, 2025, weighing 7lb 10oz.
Gemma, a nurse from Swansea, Wales, who has since divorced the child’s father, explained: ‘I hadn’t been on contraception for three years.
“I thought the prolonged bloating and nausea was a result of the procedure – and so did the clinic.
“When my friend suggested I do a urine test, I thought I could at least rule it out.
“It is very possible that the urine sample I took before my abdominoplasty did not show pregnancy because my HCG levels were too low. At the beginning of pregnancy, they usually increase.
“I had discussions about my options, but I knew in my heart that I wanted another baby.
“The thought of being pregnant while under anesthesia made my heart drop.
“Thankfully, my baby is happy and healthy.
“It’s definitely a story for the books – I don’t think I’ll ever be shocked again in my life.”
Gemma was already a mother of three from a previous relationship and had no intention of having any more children.

She completed her five-year nursing degree in August 2024 and chose to reward herself with a tummy tuck she had been saving up for to deal with the ‘flabby pouches’ on her tummy.
The procedure smooths and tightens the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat while restoring damaged abdominal muscles.
After being recommended a private clinic in Swansea, Gemma attended a consultation before arranging her surgery for August 21, costing £9,500. According to the NHSthere is an increased risk of miscarriage in patients undergoing anesthesia and surgery during pregnancy.
After the four-hour operation, Gemma remained in the clinic for a day before going home on August 16 to continue her recovery.
“I felt sick and bloated but put it down to the tummy tuck,” Gemma explained.
“The clinic agreed when I called them about it.”
However, by December 2024, four months after the procedure, Gemma’s discomfort continued, prompting her to take a home pregnancy test.
Gemma said: “I took another 10 pregnancy tests at the supermarket – all confirmed I was pregnant.
“I kept looking at the tests in disbelief.”
A scan the next day revealed she was 21 weeks pregnant.
She suspects that the minimal levels of HCG found in her blood by the clinic before the surgery meant that the pregnancy went unnoticed.

Although she considered a termination, Gemma chose to continue the pregnancy, giving birth naturally on May 2, 2025 to a 7lb 10oz baby at Singleton Hospital.
Previously a size 16, Gemma now fits a size 12.
Reflecting on the events, Gemma said: “Looking back, I can’t believe it.
“It was hectic.
“I never expected to have another child, let alone not know for 21 weeks.
“But I’m grateful – my baby boy is adorable.
“The first few days he had good lungs on him.
“He’s getting his little personality and he’s starting to laugh and smile. “Little did I know that I wouldn’t just drop a few dress sizes, I’d have another little one in my brood. “”.
