Taking care of your teeth is good for your oral health. But did you know it could also be good for your overall health? One procedure could even reduce inflammation linked to heart disease.
In a new one study from King’s College London published in Journal of Translational Medicine, The researchers monitored changes in blood chemistry after the participants were treated for root canal infections.
The Guardian reported that root canals are one of the most common dental procedures and are used to treat infection or damage to the pulp of a tooth. the soft inner tissue of a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. Over a third of adults in England have had a root canal. The study found a link between dental work and health.
About the Study
Researchers followed 65 patients from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Institution in London for two years after a root canal operation. Participants were tested before the procedure and four times afterwards. Each time, the patient’s blood was analyzed to see how it processes fat, sugar and additives.
What the team found was improved glucose metabolism, improvements in blood cholesterol and fatty acids — linked to cardiovascular health — as well as reduced inflammation, according to news bulletin from King’s College London.
“Our findings show that root canal treatment doesn’t just improve oral health – it can also help reduce the risk of serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. It is a powerful reminder that oral health is deeply linked to overall health, Dr. Sadia Niazi, senior clinical lecturer in endodontics at King’s College London, said in the press release.
What’s next?
The findings are important for global health, as so many dental infections go untreated, the Guardian reported. In fact, 3.7 billion people worldwide suffer from untreated oral diseases and a lack of dental care.
The findings show the importance of dental care and the researchers suggest that oral health should be part of a patient’s overall health care. Niazi recommended in the study that: “People need to understand that your mouth is the main gateway to your overall health, so taking care of your oral health and seeing your dentist regularly and treating disease early is the best course of action.”
So, if you’ve been diagnosed as needing a root canal, don’t despair, it could be the path to better health and overall wellness.
