Bleeding gums may look like a little hassle, just a red spot on the sink after brushing, but experts warn that it can be a red flag for deeper health concerns. Gum disease is one of the most common but undervalued health issues in India, affecting millions.
To understand when gum bleeding should increase alarm bells and what steps can help prevent it, indiatday.in spoke to Dr. Tania Nijhawan, founder of Udana Wellness, who stressed that bleeding gums should never be rejected.
Early warning signs are often ignored
“Gum disease is significant concern for public health in India. A study suggests that 95% of the population is suffering from periodontal disease, stressing a widespread issue,” Dr. Nijhawan said.
He explained that bleeding gums are often among the first gums. “Many people observe it while brushing or victories, a little blood in the sink that is easy to reject, but the body’s way of telling you something that is not right, along with bleeding, gums may look red than usual, feel tender or look.
Beyond oral hygiene: hidden activators
While most people associate gum bleeding by not brushing properly, the causes can be much more complicated.
“Bleeding gums are not always caused by poor oral hygiene, other factors such as vitamin deficiencies, hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause, certain medicines and health issues such as diabetes or liver disease can do more.”
He added that lifestyle choices often exacerbate the situation, “smoking, stress, poor nutrition and excess alcohol can also weaken gums and slow healing.
A window in general health
Dentists and medical researchers are increasingly linking oral health to systemic diseases. Periodontal disease has been associated with heart problems, diabetes and even negative pregnancy effects.
“It may seem small, but bleeding is not something to brush,” Dr. Nijhawan warned. “If left untreated, inflammation of the gums can proceed with periodontal disease, which does not only affect your teeth and gums, has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and even complications in pregnancy.
Practical treatments and prevention
Prevention of gum bleeding, experts say, greatly concerns the consistency of oral care and lifestyle choices.
“Staying in simple daily habits can make a big difference in keeping your gums healthy. Gently brushing it twice a day, thread regularly and visit to the dentist every six months are small but strong steps,” Dr. Nijhawan informed.
He stressed that oral health is in line with overall well -being. “It’s not just about cleaning your teeth, eating nutrients, cutting sugar, moisturizing and stress management also play an important role.
When to seek professional help
Many people are delayed to see a dentist, hoping that bleeding gums will improve with home treatments. Dr. Nijhawan stressed that this delay may be expensive.
“If your gums bleed occasionally, as after the thread for the first time in a little while, it can be improved with better hygiene, but if the bleeding is persistent, it is often the case or accompanied by swelling or loose teeth, it is necessary to see a dentist,” he said.
He added an attention note, “The gums should not bleed regularly, so if you notice that it continues for more than a few weeks despite good care at home, this is the time to look for professional tips.
Bleeding gums can be one of the easiest signs that something is wrong with the body, but they remain one of the most missing. Experts agree that simple preventive care and timely intervention can help ensure not only oral health but of general prosperity.
As Dr. Nijhawan concluded, the message is clear: “Don’t ignore your gums. They might tell you much more than you realize.”
