Over the past two years, oral health clinic has hosted various special events for elderly adults, including projections, cleaning, fluoride applications, imaging, extracts and exfoliations.
For two years, San Elizario Lidia Rocio Ruiz had searched for a dentist in our Borderplex before finally deciding to lead 45 minutes to attend an event in 2024.
“I felt at home, as I was with the family,” Ruiz said. “I was extremely nervous, but the students treated me as if they knew me already. That determined me.”
Ruiz said she formed a bond with the two students who care for her, adding that they gave her confidence in her smile.
Events such as the Wellmed Charitable Foundation Screen and Clean, which takes place on Friday, March 21st and on Friday, March 28th at the Texas Tech Dental Mealth Health Clinic, improve oral health among older adults in our Borderplex, where many do not have access to accessible dental care.

Many elderly adults throughout western Texas suffer from poor dental health because quality care remains far away. Reduced cost services in the clinic for oral health help older Bordlex residents to establish the usual dental care, which benefits their overall health.
According to Disease Control and Prevention Centers, regular dental visits are recommended for all elderly adults, even those with a full denture. However, Medicare does not cover the usual dental services, so that older adults have a problem with access to care.
