A New York detective and mum-of-three have died suddenly in Colombia after undergoing a high-risk Brazilian butt lift and liposuction, sparking calls for answers from her crashed husband
A police officer reportedly succumbed to a botched butt lift and other surgeries. The wife, an NYPD detective, leaves behind three children.
Alicia Stone was found unresponsive in her hotel room around 6:30 a.m. on October 23 and was quickly transferred to the Fundación Valle del Lili hospital in Cali, Colombia. The 40-year-old mother of three was reportedly pronounced dead just over an hour later.
Her death prompted her distraught husband, Michael Stone, to call for an investigation into the circumstances of her unexpected death. Alicia’s cause of death was listed as “undetermined cardiac arrest,” according to sources.
When a cause of death is listed as “undetermined cardiac arrest,” it means that the person’s heart stopped beating, resulting in death, but the underlying cause of that cardiac arrest has not been determined. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cardiac arrest is the immediate cause of death in many cases, but if a specific underlying condition, such as a heart attack, arrhythmia, or other medical problem, is not identified, the cause may be listed as “undetermined.”
According to the CDC, this designation is often used when there is insufficient information from the medical history, autopsy, or toxicology to determine exactly what caused the cardiac arrest, or when death occurs suddenly and unexpectedly without an obvious explanation.
Alicia underwent liposuction and a Brazilian butt lift, also known as a “BBL”, in Colombia on October 16, just a week before she died.
BBL is a cosmetic surgery procedure that increases the size and lifts the buttocks. It involves using liposuction to remove fat from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs or back, and then transferring that fat to the buttocks to improve their shape and volume.
Despite their increasing popularity, BBLs are considered high-risk surgical procedures. According to medical experts and studies, BBLs have one of the highest mortality rates among cosmetic procedures.
After the procedure, Alicia was prescribed anticoagulants and painkillers as part of her recovery regimen and was taken to a hotel to recover, the New York Post reported. Her husband Michael told the Daily News: “The doctor who called me from Colombia just called me and told me my wife had just died.
“She had no information to tell me when I asked her… Something doesn’t add up.
“To get a call on Thursday and be told she’s passed away, that’s just shocking and hurtful.” The grieving husband added: “I don’t have the facts, and that’s what I need, the facts of what happened.”
Michael also shared that his wife seemed “perfectly fine” before the operation and had told her family members the day before she died that she was feeling fine. A fundraiser has since been organized for Alicia’s family who described her as a “beloved mother of three and dedicated public servant who spent her career protecting and serving others.”
The fundraiser also said: “Alicia’s kindness, courage and compassion touched everyone she met, both in and out of uniform. Her unexpected death has left a huge void in the lives of her family, friends and fellow officers.”
Alicia worked with the NYPD for 13 years. In addition, he was a member of the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau.
One such procedure involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks, which, if not performed correctly, can lead to serious complications such as fat embolism, a potentially fatal condition where fat enters the bloodstream and blocks vital blood vessels. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has warned that improper technique or lack of experience can significantly increase these risks.
Other possible complications include infection, blood clots, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Patients are advised to thoroughly research their surgeon’s qualifications and discuss all potential risks before undergoing BBL.
