Sarah Macdonald discusses why the Orthodontic Therapist Masterclass was such a success and what attendees can expect from the next one.
The Orthodontic Therapist Masterclass, held on June 28 in London, was a great success.
Organized by Sarah Macdonald, known online as ‘The London OT’, the event attracted 18 enthusiastic delegates and featured a dynamic and comprehensive agenda that kept everyone fully engaged.
This masterclass was born out of Sarah’s recognition of a gap in educational opportunities designed specifically for orthodontic therapists.
This highly specialized, but small, subgroup of dental professionals manages a wide range of daily procedures, each requiring precise knowledge and up-to-date training.
With the rapid developments in the industry, Sarah saw the need to offer a course that would help orthodontic therapists stay at the forefront of their field.
Course agenda
The day began with an introduction session, including a warm welcome, a report from the sponsor, Curaprox, and a presentation of the agenda.
Basic information about the facilities, safety protocols and photography permits made sure everyone felt comfortable. Attendees were also introduced to the speakers, course assistants and some special guests.
- Biofilm Guided Therapy (GBT) and Orthodontics: Delegates were introduced to the innovative GBT method, which emphasizes the importance of biofilm management in orthodontic treatment. Airflow Prophylaxis Master professional demonstration demonstrated how to comfortably and effectively remove biofilm, stains and tartar supragingivally
- Minimally invasive prophylaxis: attendees were shown how the airflow technique provided 100% accessibility around orthodontic brackets without the need to remove wires, ligatures or elastics. He also highlighted how to safely and effectively remove all biofilm, improving patient comfort and compliance
- Maintaining optimal oral hygiene: the challenges of unmotivated patients were discussed. The importance of a thorough understanding of the systemic effects of poor oral hygiene was discussed, including the need for knowledge, confidence and skills to effectively educate and motivate patients to maintain good oral care practices
- Lunch break: Curaprox, the event sponsor, provided a delicious meal. Delegates took this time to network and discuss the ideas of the morning, while the afternoon session was expertly set up by the speakers and course facilitators
- Invisalign Basics: Delegates explored the digital workflow and software capability essential to modern orthodontic practices. Participants gained confidence in navigating different software, which enhanced their digital workflow and optimized the efficiency of their practice
- Fixed Welded Retainer Masterclass: This session included a detailed presentation, a hands-on demonstration, and a hands-on workshop, allowing attendees to gain first-hand experience with cutting-edge techniques. The hands-on session provided delegates with the opportunity to hone their skills and apply what they had learned from Sarah, who is renowned for her skill and precise technique in applying fixed retainers.
The day ended on a high note with gift bags for all attendees and a group photo.
Success and feedback
The success of the event was greatly enhanced by the support of EMS, who generously provided the necessary equipment and units. EMS instructor Anna Middleton gave an outstanding performance, managing every aspect of the equipment – from setup and presentation to analysis with remarkable efficiency. Anna’s engaging and informative style kept all 18 delegates fully engaged and her expertise was widely praised.
Curaprox played a vital role as a sponsor of the event, providing delicious lunch and refreshments, as well as goodie bags which added a special touch to the day, and delegates were particularly impressed with the quality of products on display at the Curaprox booth.
It was amazing to have so many orthodontic therapists in one room sharing their experiences and the highlights of their work, as well as some of the challenges they face. It was great to see so many people posting content from the day on social media to share with their friends and followers – the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
One attendee said: “Thank you so much for putting on such a brilliant run, [it was] so inspiring to us all.
“Especially someone like me only two years into the industry – you really helped me duel my passion.”
Another commented: “I hope this is just the beginning of an exciting new future for orthodontic therapists.”
Upcoming event
Given the overwhelming success of the event and the high demand for more, the next Orthodontic Therapists Masterclass is scheduled for Friday 25th October.
The previous event sold out quickly and had a waiting list, so we expect high demand for this upcoming session. Orthodontic therapists who want to advance their skills and keep up to date with the latest techniques should not miss this opportunity.
EMS has again kindly agreed to lend their equipment, ensuring delegates get hands-on experience with state-of-the-art tools.
Curaprox will also return to provide their excellent support, making the event a complete and enriching experience.
