Over a period of three years, 357 navigation accidents were recorded in Biscayne Bay, causing several deaths.
As Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the start of the summer season, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) has issued a few safety reminders to help boaters keep safety top of mind while enjoying the sun and fun from Miami.
Boating Safety Tips by MDFR:
– The first thing to do to keep everyone safe in and around water is to learn to swim, especially if you participate in water activities.
– Don’t drink or go boating. Alcohol and boating don’t mix. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination, all of which are necessary for boating safety, especially for the vessel’s operator.
– Before leaving shore, make sure the vessel is in good working order and that all safety equipment, such as at least one Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each passenger on the boat, is on board. Boats must also have a first aid kit and fire extinguisher on board.
– Before leaving, tell a responsible person where you will be and how long you will be gone. In an emergency, this information could be key.
– Protect your cell phone in a plastic bag and place it in a floating container to have it on hand in case of an emergency.
– Make sure you know how to use your VHS radio and turn it to channel 16 to communicate in an emergency.
– The operator must wear an engine switch to shut off the engine if he moves away from the controls.
– Prevent propeller injuries or accidents by keeping an eye on your surroundings. Before starting the engine, make sure there is no one near the boat’s propeller.
– Do not start a boat with the engine in gear, board or disembark with the engine running or idling.
