The FDA has issued several warnings against injectable silicone for body contouring and said it can lead to long-term pain, infection and serious injury, including death.
“Injectable silicone oil (breaks) into smaller particles throughout the body, potentially causing permanent damage and life-threatening complications such as stroke, embolism and even death,” Lisa Vasquez, board-certified aesthetic nurse at Pearlman Aesthetic Surgery, he said USA Today.
Vasquez cautioned that the silicone injection reversal procedure is difficult, even for the most skilled plastic surgeons.
“Removal will require immediate incision or VASER-assisted, ultrasound-guided liposuction, [which] it removes injectable silicone, silicone nodules and scar tissue,” he said.
“But there’s nothing that can dissolve liquid silicone. The granulomas that form must be surgically removed.’
The FDA he said injectable silicone stays in the body forever because the material will never break down.
“Injectable silicone is permanent and stays in your body. It can travel throughout the body and cause serious health consequences, including death,” the FDA said.

In California, a mother and daughter duo were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for a fatal butt lift last month.
Libby Adame, 53, and her daughter Alicia Galaz were charged with causing the death of their client, Karissa Rajpaul, 26, in October 2019.
The mother and daughter ran an illegal Brazilian butt lift surgery using ‘toxic’ compounds in their silicone injections.
Prosecutors said they fled the scene after several botched surgeries, including when Rajpaul suffered a heart attack on their operating table in a hotel.
