“It gives you so much confidence”

Ben Stokes has shared how a hair transplant boosted his confidence, revealing how he underwent the procedure when the hair loss was “excessive”.

The English cricketer, 32, had the FUE transplant (Follicular Unit Extraction) in 2018 after camera shots while he was playing revealed a growing bald patch.

“I saw the footage of myself and the angle would be a bird’s-eye view, straight up,” he said. Telegraph. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is getting worse and worse.’

Stokes said he decided to have the procedure when the way he felt about his hair “got to the point where it was getting too much”.

He said the results gave him “a lot more confidence” and he hopes that by talking about his experiences, he will continue to help break down barriers to broaden the conversation around male pattern baldness.

“Men and hair are one thing,” she explains. “Proceedings were kept quiet. It was almost one of those things you didn’t want people to know you had done.

“There’s a lot more to it than just losing your hair. If you start thinning, you notice it and you’re constantly trying to do something to make it not look so bad. As people get older, they want to have a good head. So whatever they can they do to feel better about themselves, why not?

“I know how I felt, from all the compliments I got. It gives you so much confidence. The stigma and secrecy is gone.”

Stokes isn’t the only celebrity to discuss hair transplants. Lee Mead, 42, recently spoke openly about the procedure he underwent in Turkey earlier this year.

“There’s nothing wrong with being bald, but it’s a very personal thing and for me I wasn’t ready to go bald yet, so I went and had the surgery,” the actor told Ranvir Singh on Lorraine.

James Haskell also revealed earlier this year that he has not ruled out undergoing a transplant.

The 37-year-old rugby star, who is married to Chloe Madeley, said he might consider getting his hair ‘fixed’ as it is thinning.

“Would I get plastic surgery? Probably, if I need to,” Haskell is quoted as saying Independent.

“I’m going to get my hair done sometime because it’s thinning.”

Meanwhile, Robbie Williams also shared that he had previously undergone the procedure in 2013 and in 2020 wanted to undergo further treatment but was told that this was not possible as his hair was now too thin.

Jimmy Carr and James Nesbitt have also opened up about the hair replacement process.

What does the hair transplant procedure involve?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant treatments are now widely known as one of the best transplant techniques. This compares to Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) which used to be the standard procedure.

There is no one-size-fits-all price when it comes to hair transplants, as each transplant is entirely bespoke to the patient. the cost can vary depending on many factors.

According ISHRS Practice Inventory 2022the average cost of a hair transplant in the UK is £4,820.

Mr Khan says some of the factors that can affect the cost include the overall complexity of the transplant, the type of hair loss, the likelihood of future hair loss and individual characteristics such as the amount of grafts needed and the color and texture of hair.

What to do if you are considering a hair transplant

Hair transplant surgery can be a lifesaver for many people, providing a confidence boost that would otherwise be impossible. But how do you know if you’re eligible for one and where to go?

“It’s important to first learn about the procedure, what it involves, what the recovery is like – but more importantly who is doing the transplant, why you should choose them and whether you trust them,” he adds.

Once you’ve done your research, visit clinics for a consultation and look for surgeons you can trust who have a good track record of results.

It is also recommended that you check if the surgeon or clinic of your choice is part of IAHRS.org (International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons) as this is an organization for vetting surgeons to be ethical, honest and working in the best interest the patients .
