Application of fermentation on the face from Macrocystis pyrifera and creams that include the fermentation may reduce inflammation and signs of aging, according to study results published in Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Researchers convened a dermatology advisory board to present the challenges associated with using skin care for facial rejuvenation and to conduct a literature review to evaluate evidence of its anti-inflammatory, antiaging, and healing effects. M pyrifera fermentation — produced from sustainable harvest M pyrifera, a giant seaweed — and 2 creams containing the fermentation. The board also evaluated the role of fermentation in optimizing facial skin rejuvenation.
Preclinical research has shown that M pyrifera fermentation enhances barrier integrity. In an in vitro study, cells treated with M pyrifera Fermentation migrated faster than untreated cells. In another study, the topical application of M pyrifera fermentation in human skin explants increased the production of type I collagen, which declines with age.
Clinical data for M pyrifera Fermentation alone and in 2 moisturizing vehicles showed anti-inflammatory and visible soothing benefits, as well as a significant reduction in erythema associated with use.

Studies investigating antiaging evaluated the clinical effects of 2 creams containing M pyrifera fermentation in parameters related to the visible aging of the facial skin. In these studies, researchers reported significant improvement associated with the creams, including reduced redness. No confirmed side effects were observed.
In clinical studies investigating the effects of fermentation on the stratum corneum, treatment with the 2 creams containing M pyrifera Fermentation enhances barrier strength and recovery by increasing moisture levels and reducing transepidermal water loss.
Repeated challenge patch testing showed no sensitization reactions or product-related adverse reactions in patients treated with facial applications of creams containing M pyrifera enzyme.
Limitations include the mostly small sample sizes of the included studies and the absence of biomarkers to validate the activity of fermentation and cream containing fermentation. Furthermore, there is a lack of robust clinical data comparing the effects of facial rejuvenation products.
