President Joe Biden had a Sunday layoff that ended Monday, forcing him to miss hosting an event with NCAA athletes and a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
White House physician Kevin O’Connor wrote in a letter Monday morning that Biden, 80, was experiencing tooth pain on Sunday and it was decided he should receive a root canal, which was performed by Walter Reed’s team at the White House Dental Office. .
“He is feeling further discomfort this morning, which was expected,” the doctor said on Monday. “The endodontic specialty team from Walter Reed will complete the president’s root canal today at the White House.”
The 25th Amendment will not need to be invoked because a patient is not put under anesthesia for the procedure.
Immediately after the White House sent the doctor’s note, the program was changed to show that Vice President Kamala Harris would lead the event with the winning athletes instead of the president.
Later on Monday, the White House said Stoltenberg’s meeting had been rescheduled for Tuesday, along with a Monday night reception for the Heads of Mission.

The College Athlete Day event will bring champions from volleyball, ice hockey, track and field and other sporting events.
Second major Doug Emhoff is also scheduled to attend.
The president previously hosted the women’s basketball champions, Louisiana State University, and the men’s, the University of Connecticut.
As the 2024 race heats up, questions continue to be raised about Biden’s health as he is the oldest man to ever serve as president.
Earlier this month, Biden tripped and fell at a graduation ceremony at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado.
“They sandbagged me,” he later joked, since that was the object on the floor that was giving him trouble.
Former President Donald Trump, Biden’s leading Republican rival, mocked the 80-year-old for the stumble.
“Did it finally fall? Well, I hope he wasn’t hurt,” Trump said in Iowa.

“You have to be careful about it,” the former president continued, even if you have to “tiptoe off a ramp,” he added, poking fun at a moment that went viral in June 2020.
Trump’s slow walk down a ramp at West Point raised questions about his health as he ran for re-election against Biden.
Biden has also tripped on the steps of Air Force One several times and fell off his bike during a trip to Rehoboth Beach last June.
This is on top of being prone to blunders.
In February, the White House released the results of Biden’s second physical in office.
O’Connor said Biden was “healthy” and “vibrant” and the main noticeable difference was a lesion on his chest that had been sent for a cancer check.
In March O’Connor said the lesion was basal cell carcinoma, a common and non-aggressive form of skin cancer.
Biden did not require follow-up, the doctor said, after the lesion was removed.
Biden’s physical included a “neurological examination” that found nothing “consistent with any cerebellar or central neurological disorder,” but not a cognitive test, which Republicans have requested.
Presidential candidate Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the United Nations and governor of South Carolina, opened her 2024 bid for the White House in February with an invitation for candidates over 75 to take an “aptitude test.”
While much of her ire was directed at Biden, Trump would also fit in as he turns 77 later this week.
