What makes Dentsply Sirona’s new SmartLite Pro EndoActivator the solution for faster and more efficient root canal irrigation?
The number one concern for clinicians performing endodontic treatment is root canal cleaning.
Approximately 35% of canal surfaces remain untouched after instrumentation, mainly due to the anatomical complexity of the root canal system.
However, the long-term success of endodontic procedures depends on a clean canal.
Why is root canal irrigation important?
Irrigation is the key to successful root canal treatment as it fulfills many important functions.
It works to dissolve and remove pulp tissue, dental debris, plaque, and microorganisms and their byproducts from the root canal.
At the same time, it reduces the friction between the instrument and the dentin, cools the file and the tooth, while improving the cutting performance of the files.
Considerations for effective root canal irrigation
Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCL) in concentrations between 0.5% and 6% is the primary irrigation solution used to kill bacteria and dissolve necrotic tissue. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in a 15% or 17% solution is also commonly used as a chelating agent and for its smear layer removal properties.
In addition to the antibacterial properties of irrigating fluids, the administration process is also essential for adequate cleaning of the canal, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
A passive bleach soak takes up to 40 minutes to effectively kill bacteria. However, many clinicians only soak for less than five minutes, potentially leaving behind bacteria that can compromise treatment.
Activating irrigating fluids can help create a cleaner surface with more open dentinal tubules and less debris left behind, allowing for better obturation of the lateral and accessory canals.
Try the SmartLite Pro EndoActivator
The SmartLite Pro EndoActivator is the latest addition to Dentsply Sirona’s line of endodontic treatment solutions, designed for the intracanal activation of irrigating fluids used to clean and disinfect root canals.
With multi-directional motion and 360° rotation, the SmartLite Pro EndoActivator uses elliptical motion and increased energy to effectively activate fluids ProTaper Ultimate, WaveOne Gold and TruNatomy channels.
The SLP EndoActivator tips have a new parallelogram-shaped cross-sectional design to improve fluid exchange and cleanability during root canal irrigation. The tips are made of medical grade non-cutting polymer to make them strong and flexible without protrusion, porting, enlargement or shaping of the canal.
Interchangeable bits are color coded with depth gauge orientation rings located at 18, 19 and 20mm. Tips are available in three sizes: small (15/02, 22 mm in length); medium (25/04, length 22 mm). and the new medium length (25/04, 28mm long) for better support of longer file lengths.
The EndoActivator accessory is the latest addition to the modular SmartLite Pro system, joining the polymerization light end and the transillumination end, allowing the SmartLite Pro to support an even greater variety of clinical procedures.
Experts agree
Dr. Clifford J. Randle said: “The goal of global endodontics should be to provide the largest number of international patients with a 3D disinfection method that is safe, effective and easily accessible.
“Importantly, the chosen 3D decontamination method should be easy to use and fit seamlessly into a workflow that considers each pillar of the endodontic triad and its role in endodontic success.
“If you have the desire to treat a root canal and are looking for predictability, capability and practicality, look no further than the SmartLite Pro EndoActivator.”
