Kanye West convinced his fans that he had all his teeth removed for a wild reason.
The 46-year-old rapper is known for his intense passion for fashion, with him and wife Bianca Censori regularly making headlines for being covered up from head to toe (Kanye) and wearing next to nothing (Bianca).
Now the father-of-four has taken a wild new step – replacing his teeth with titanium prosthetics, which apparently cost almost a million dollars.
Kanye – who goes by Ye – shared a photo of his new teeth on Instagram, showing off the shiny, silver-colored titanium with two points almost like vampire teeth.
He compared himself to James Bond villain Jaws, who appeared in two 007 films and is best known for his metal teeth.
Kanye’s grills cost an estimated $850,000 (£700,000) and were made by Dr Thomas Connelly in Beverly Hills. A source has now given more details about the procedure to Metro.co.uk and rubbished rumors that the star had his teeth removed for the procedure.
The source said that “fixed prosthetics are, as the name suggests, fixed and permanent.”
“This goes beyond veneers or grills. And his particular implant is unlike anything that’s been done before,” they continued.
Titanium components also include “other precious metals” including platinum, with the process described as “experimental dentistry at the very least.”
They confirmed, however, that “his teeth were not removed.”
Reports had indicated that Ye had all of his teeth surgically removed to make way for dentures, which naturally freaked out his fans.
However, another dentist who worked on the look, Naoki Hayashi Master Ceramist, was quick to dismiss the rumours.
The cosmetic dentist shared the art of the metal fabrication, garnering thousands of likes and comments – and one user, _markthebunny_, asked what we were all thinking: “Did he really pull all his teeth?”
Naoki quickly answered and ordered them all with a simple ‘no’.
Dentist Dr Connelly told the Daily Mail that Kanye’s “vision for designing unique art goes beyond dental development. Marrying his vision with dental science has created a new look that is epic!”
It looks like Kanye may actually have been inspired by his daughter for the new look.
Kanye shares North, 10, Saint, eight, Chicago, six, and four-year-old Psalm with ex-wife Kim Kardashian, and the eldest North is taking to social media, closely watched by her mother.
This week North uploaded a “photo dump” of memories to her and Kim’s TikTok page, with pictures of her wearing diamond-like grills on many of her teeth.
North’s grills appear to be temporary and removable, as she’s been seen with and without the diamond additions in posts dating back months.
Kanyes, however, is not – surgical dentures can only be implanted after a person’s teeth have been removed.
In 2010, Kanye had diamond and gold implants on his bottom set of teeth and insisted to Ellen DeGeneres that they were now permanent, having “replaced” his bottom row.
“I guess there are just certain things that rock stars are supposed to do,” he said at the time – although there was skepticism at the time as to whether he had actually pulled his teeth.
