Kehlani opens up about the decision to have her breast implants removed.
“I got breast implants about four years ago because I struggle a lot with what beauty meant to me,” the “Altar” singer said. Birdienoting that they were regularly accused of not looking focused enough.
“I remember that video of me going viral,” they said. “People were like ‘he’s freaking built.’ So I went and got breast implants.”
But Kehlani said their physical health suffered afterward. The singer went through years of medical complications and also battled chronic fatigue, brain fog, severe joint pain, restless legs syndrome and new allergies.
“My doctor said, ‘I think you have breast implant disease,”” they said. Breast implant diseasein case you are not familiar with it, it is not an official medical diagnosis but it is something FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) has recognized.
According to the FDA, breast implant disease is a term used to describe a variety of symptoms that may be reported by some women after reconstruction or augmentation with breast implants. This can lead to certain symptoms, such as:
-
fatigue
-
brain fog
-
joint and muscle pain
-
hair loss
-
weight changes
-
anxiety and depression
“The occurrence of such symptoms has been reported with all types of breast implants regardless of filler, shape, or surface feature, and they occur from immediately after implantation to years later,” the FDA says. “Although some women report improvement or resolution of symptoms after the implants are removed, the cause of the symptoms and the extent to which they may be related to the implants is unclear at this time.” Because of this, the FDA says, the investigation is ongoing. Also, there are no official tests or criteria for diagnosing breast implant disease.
Kehlani said their new boobs also made them uncomfortable from a mental health standpoint. “I was already uncomfortable with my breast implants because I’m so ‘tomboyish,'” they said. “So how do I get them into clothes?”
So Kehlani decided to have her implants quietly removed.
“I actually feel a lot more beautiful than I’ve ever felt because I feel healthy,” they said. “I really don’t take my physical body for granted anymore. I did things that got away because my body type wasn’t supposed to change the way I thought I could.”
Kehlani also said they felt they “let people bully me into feeling like I needed this.”
They added, “It’s been such a journey to figure out how I feel about my appearance. I always felt that I was searching for ‘beauty’, never sitting in it.’
But Kehlani said they feel sexiest “when I’m the most stripped down and comfortable. For me, sexiness is clean hair, good waxes and applying oil after showering. It’s all about taking care of myself, more than the sexiest outfit. That’s when I feel good.”
