To combat the signs of ageing, Dr Anne Gormley shows how you can combine the specialties of cosmetic dentistry with facial aesthetics.
Some patients reach a point in their lives where they want to stop the clock.
There could be various reasons for this, which should act as a trigger for the facial cosmetic dentist. For example, reaching a certain milestone with our children, noticing extra wrinkles around the eyes, noticing loose skin along the lower jaw.
Patients may talk about looking old and tired, or that they have dull skin, or that they no longer have the glow of youth.
In today’s world, the facial cosmetic dentist can offer many treatments to combat the signs of aging.
These treatments include:
- Chemical peeling
- Micro needling
- Radio frequency therapy.
A chemical/acid peel is an important tool for skin rejuvenation and helps treat skin conditions such as:
- Acne
- Rosacea
- Hyperpigmentation
- Photodamage
- Lines and wrinkles.
Using a combination of acids, antioxidants, anti-aging and brightening boosters, you’ll get great results and less downtime.
A very popular way to reduce wrinkles and plump the cheeks is to use non-surgical facial cosmetic treatments. They give fresher skin.
For the dentist, there are several key tips to make sure your patients achieve optimal results.
A qualified professional
First, you should know a qualified and experienced practitioner to refer patients to if you are unable to meet the challenge.
Make sure the practitioner is qualified to perform the treatments.
A personal consultation with the patient is necessary before starting the treatment.
At this visit I will usually document a detailed medical history along with lifestyle habits. Time will be taken to discuss the various treatment options with details of the material used, how much will be injected and how long the improvements will last.
I also describe possible complications with the treatments in the event of an adverse reaction.
Sterile environment
The dental office is the ideal environment for facial aesthetics.
Skin injections can lead to infections, so it is imperative that the clinic you choose has a strong emphasis on cleanliness, with medical-type surgery preferred.
Fine lines and wrinkles vs. anti-aging treatments
The most effective way to prevent the formation of static wrinkles is anti-wrinkle injections.
Neuromuscular toxin temporarily blocks nerve signals to the muscles limiting their movement and healing expression lines. Facial muscles relax resulting in smoother, softer and more natural looking skin.
I usually study the patient’s facial muscles and apply the right amount of product to produce the most subtle and natural result. The most common areas for neuromuscular toxin administration are in the forehead area, between the eyebrows and in the corner of the eyes.
To add volume and plump the skin, dermal fillers are commonly used. The most commonly used dermal filler is made from hyaluronic acid, mainly because there is material available that can reverse the effects of the dermal filler.
The material is injected with both a needle and a cannula. Fillers are gel-like substances with a different consistency. a firmer consistency is required in the cheek area while a more elastic material is used on the lips.
