We’ve officially entered a new era of weirdness, as the Duolingo bird has undergone a butt lift in Brazil.
The green owl is recognizable as the mascot for the language learning app used by millions around the world, and over the years has become a meme in its own right thanks to its guilty and sometimes downright menacing reminders for users to keep up with the language lessons.
But the duo has taken things a step further now, as they’ve gone under the knife in preparation for the Super Bowl… for some reason.
And in even weirder news, the video is pointlessly graphic.
In a clip uploaded to TikTok by Duolingo’s official account, celebrity plastic surgeon Dr Miami – real name Michael Salzhauer – Duo undergoes a consultation, dressed in a hospital gown, while Dr Miami uses a teddy Duo to show where they’re going the implants, while a photo of the owl in a bikini appears in the background.
Dr. Miami states that he wants Duo’s bottom to be “big, big, BIG!” – and the owl duly signs the consent form.
The video then shows Dr. Miami actually operating on Duo’s rear, and it looks really brutal… and in a terrifying twist, Duo is awake during the procedure as he gives the owl version of the thumbs up as the surgeon cuts with a knife.
Again, this is all in a real video, on the official Duolingo account.
After the operation, Dr. Miami bandages Duo’s bum – who has successfully been elevated beyond recognition.
Dr. Miami and Duo leave the hospital hand in hand, before Duo shows off his new look by twerking for the camera.
To no one’s surprise, the video has divided opinion somewhat, as some found it funny while many others found it… well, downright weird.
On X, user James Barr called the video “very disturbing,” while SNS said it was “so weird, he should be teaching me French.
Attentionforari stated that it was “time to log off, I’ve seen enough”.
“Duolingo is so annoying,” Ilua wrote on TikTok, while Maite said “Duolingo deleted because of this video.”
Dr. Miami became an internet sensation when he shared before and after work with his clients, and his book, My Beautiful Mommy, brought him more recognition.
It has dozens of celebrity clients, including several MTV Teen Mom alumni — and, now, the Duolingo bird.
It’s definitely a unique marketing tactic for the educational app, but it definitely gets people talking.
