As an experienced doctor who knows the field, he wants to answer a question he is often asked,
“What are the pros and cons of dental implants versus bridges?”
Dental Implants
Implants are a good option for tooth loss due to injury or disease. A dental implant is a titanium post that acts like a tooth root to support a crown.
The implant is surgically placed in the jawbone. It will then heal and eventually integrate into the jawbone in that location. This fusion process usually takes three to six months. Once completed, an abutment is attached to the implant post. The abutment protrudes above the gum line to support the dental crown.
Dental bridges
For the purposes of this discussion, bridges are used to “bridge” the gap between one or more missing teeth. The surrounding natural teeth support the bridge. Bridges consist of two or more crowns for the teeth in each part of the gap.
Dental Implants Vs. Bridges: Advantages and Disadvantages
What is the risk of dental disease?
Dental implants: One reason dental implants often have a better long-term prognosis is because they cannot develop cavities. they can develop gum disease, so professional preventative treatment is still important with implants.
Vs.
Dental bridges: Good oral hygiene is essential to ensure that cavities do not develop on bridges supporting natural teeth. Likewise, gum disease should be professionally monitored.
What are the long-term effects on dental health?
Dental implants: Little to no bone or gum loss.
Vs.
Dental bridges: Some bone or gum loss in the area of the missing tooth.
How to take care of them?
Dental implants: Brush and floss as usual.
Vs.
Dental bridges: Requires special floss and a different technique to clean properly.
Does it need surgery?
Dental implants: Yes
Vs.
Dental bridges: No
What is the cost?
Dental implants: Replacing a single tooth with an implant can cost upwards of $5,000 due to surgery and increased lab fees.
Vs.
Dental bridges: A three-unit bridge (to replace a missing tooth) usually costs about $3,500.
However, these restorations may need to be replaced more often than implant restorations due to problems with the natural supporting teeth.
(Note: Costs associated with implants and bridges will vary depending on the type of procedure chosen for both and the average cost can vary significantly depending on where you live)
How long is the procedure and healing time?
Dental implants: Multiple visits over 3 to 6 months.
Vs.
Dental bridges: 2 to 3 visits in a few weeks.
Dr. Justin DeGarmo recognizes that patients ultimately determine the pros and cons of dental treatment options based on their unique circumstances. Many factors can affect whether a patient is a good candidate for either a dental implant or a bridge: it depends on each patient’s oral condition, costs and aesthetic preferences. These are some general guidelines that should not take the place of a professional dental examination considering individual factors.
