A mother-of-three died after a “truly barbaric” Brazilian butt lift (BBL) operation in Turkey, an inquest heard.
Bolton Coroner John Pollard found Demi Agoglia, 26, dead at a hospital in Constantinople on January 8, three days after the operation, as a result of an accident caused by negligence.
He told the Salford woman’s family he would write to the health secretary to raise concerns about BBL procedures, which see fat taken from elsewhere in the body and injected into the hips and buttocks.
“I feel that something more needs to be done to stop this frankly barbaric medical practice being carried out at such low standards that it would certainly not be tolerated in the UK,” he said.
Ms Agoglia’s mother, Christine Tydd, said she had told her daughter she was a “good girl” and did not need the operation.
“She was conscious of her appearance,” she told the inquest. “He didn’t change his mind.”
Ms Agoglia’s partner, Bradley Jones, also said he did not want to have the surgery but had booked the trip through a company called Comfort Zone Surgery months before they traveled to Turkey on January 4 after seeing it advertised by “some celebrity”. .
The couple stayed in a shared villa in Istanbul before being taken by taxi to the hospital.
But the landscape painter Mr. Jones said Ms Agoglia was “shaking” and appeared “very, very cold” after the operation.
Comfort Zone staff, who had no medical qualifications, were called to the villa and tried to feed Mrs Agoglia pieces of cucumber after she collapsed, the inquest heard.
Pathologist Dr Usha Chandran told the hearing: “I’m really disturbed by Demi’s death and I feel like all these cosmetic procedures are being given a lot of attention by celebrities… and they’re done in bad clinics.”
Mr. Pollard found the medical cause of death to be a tiny fat embolism in which the tissue leaks into the bloodstream.
“I find there was no proper informed consent in this matter, no proper pre-operative care and counseling and no proper post-operative care,” he said.
“All of this meant that the overall care fell well below the standard expected for this type of treatment and the lack of care contributed significantly to Demi’s death.”

The coroner said the inquest was “particularly sad” as it involved the death of a young woman with significant mental health problems who, despite being beautiful and her partner not believing she needed any improvement, insisted on having BBL surgery “.
“I found it went to Turkey probably because the process was quicker and cheaper than the UK,” he said.
“I find the post-op care to range from dismal to completely non-existent,” added Mr. Pollard.
“When she developed obvious symptoms of serious illness, she was understandably not immediately recognized by her partner or untrained staff.
“By the time he got to the hospital it was frankly too late and he was in an irreversible condition.
“I think it was indicative of the poor level of care that at all times she was taken not by ambulance but by taxi, it was always the same taxi.”
After the inquest, Ms Agoglia’s sister Chloe, 23, warned people not to go to Turkey for surgery.
“She was so beautiful and she just didn’t need any surgery,” he said.
“She only went for the sake of being so down on herself and not feeling good enough.
“Our Dem didn’t just leave her family behind, she left the most beautiful baby boys.”
