Without regular preventative care, patients could face average costs of more than £500 for major restorative treatment, according to new data from Unum Dental.
From 8 June, UK dental practices were able to reopen for patients[1]after two months closure; making it easier for patients to reschedule exams or book much-needed treatments. However, research shows that a third of patients plan to visit their dentist less often since restrictions were eased [2].
Getting back into a routine of regular visits to the dentist and hygienist is vital to ensuring long-term oral health and preventing more serious health problems from developing unnoticed. Checkups include examination of teeth and gums. screening for general health and teeth, mouth and gum problems; and advice on diet, smoking and brushing habits[3] – all of which may have been overlooked during the lockdown. But Unum claims the data suggests there’s a high financial price for putting off a trip to the dentist, too.
In terms of cost, employees with Unum Dental coverage who visit their dentist for regular private preventive treatment, such as dental checkups and cleanings and x-rays, as well as restorative treatment when needed, such as fillings, crowns and implants, can expect to be charged, on average, £326.98 per year for these services. Those who skip preventative treatment and only seek restorative treatment can see the cost of treatment rise to an average of £530.57[4] – that’s a 62% increase in cost per patient.
Andrew Bower, CEO of Unum Dental commented: “Dental closures due to Covid-19 have made it difficult for patients to receive preventive treatment. Without regular checkups, many oral health problems can manifest and, if left untreated, lead to major procedures being required.
“Dental coverage is the most popular flexible health benefit offered[5] by employers and after a prolonged period where people have not been able to see their dentist, it is imperative that employers ensure their staff are fully aware of the dental cover available and reinforce the importance of regular dental care. Not only will this help with their financial planning, but it will also alleviate any concerns about their oral health, which is vital to maintain as poor oral health has been linked to further health issues such as heart disease and cancer.
“With many people working from home and not traveling to city centres, our proposition provides cover for any dentist anywhere in the world, which will help anyone looking to change dentists or have treatment closer to home” .
“To further assist employees working remotely, Unum Dental operates a digital portal to provide a user-friendly online experience that is fully optimized for ease and speed of use.”
Unum Dental helps cover the cost of both preventive and restorative treatments for policy members and their families, if covered, at a dentist of their choice.
