Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is becoming increasingly popular. As the experiences of many patients who underwent the procedure go by, rhinoplasty is no longer just about enhancing facial aesthetics.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Rajat Gupta, Delhi-based board certified plastic surgeon and founder of RG Aesthetics, “Rhinoplasty is a transformative procedure that also resolves functional issues like breathing difficulties. By reshaping the nose, it harmonizes the facial features, boosting self-confidence. In addition, it also helps those struggling with nasal blockages, improving their quality of life. This combination of cosmetic and functional benefits makes rhinoplasty a sought-after option for many.”
While the procedure is sought after for its various benefits, there are several myths revolving around rhinoplasty. Dr. Rajat Gupta has dispelled such myths so that aspirants can make informed decisions –
Myth 1: Rhinoplasty results look unnatural.
Fact: This is an outdated notion. Today’s techniques are advanced, focusing on harmonizing the nose with the patient’s overall facial features. The aim of rhinoplasty is to improve, not change, its appearance. So essentially, the nose, after surgery, should look better, improving the overall appearance of the person’s face, not someone else’s nose or face. Rhinoplasty is therefore highly personalized, ensuring natural results.
Myth 2: The recovery process is very difficult and painful.
Fact: Recovery has improved significantly. We use modern surgical methods such as ultrasonic rhinoplasty using a piezotome, making the pain quite manageable compared to traditional rhinoplasty. This is because collateral damage to adjacent tissues is greatly reduced, reducing pain and downtime. Most patients resume normal activities within two days. It is important, however, to follow the post-operative instructions closely for an easy recovery and the best results.
Myth 3: Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is only for women.
Fact: No way. The number of men opting for rhinoplasty is steadily increasing. They seek it for the same reasons as women – functional improvement, boosting self-confidence or correcting asymmetries. It is a procedure for anyone who needs it.
According to Dr Priya Bansal, Plastic Surgeon at Skinnovation Clinics in New Delhi, rhinoplasty can significantly boost a person’s confidence and overall satisfaction with their appearance by reshaping the nose, correcting structural problems and creating a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Reiterating that despite the popularity of the procedure, there are some common misconceptions about it, he listed below some common myths surrounding Rhinoplasty and debunked them –
Myth 1: Rhinoplasty is dangerous and complicated.
Fact: Like any surgery, there are risks, but they are minimal when performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon. A board-certified surgeon undergoes rigorous training to perform such procedures and is skilled at minimizing risk and complications. When a patient comes to me for the procedure, I evaluate their nose for 25 different types of deformities and go into a detailed consultation session to understand what is required of the patient and what can be achieved through the procedure. It helps to set clear expectations and the procedure becomes safer, crystal clear and transparent[parentThekeyisathoroughpre-surgicalevaluationandawell-plannedproceduretailoredtoeachindividual[parentThekeyisathoroughpre-surgicalevaluationandwell-plannedproceduretailoredtoeachindividual[γονικήΤοκλειδίείναιμιαενδελεχήςπροεγχειρητικήαξιολόγησηκαιμιακαλάσχεδιασμένηδιαδικασίαπροσαρμοσμένησεκάθεάτομο[parentThekeyisathoroughpre-surgicalevaluationandawell-plannedproceduretailoredtoeachindividual
Myth 2: Rhinoplasty is purely cosmetic.
Fact: There is more to it. In addition to cosmetic improvements, it is often done to correct structural problems or improve breathing. It is both functional and cosmetic. There are types of rhinoplasty, such as rhinoplasty, that address the functionality of the nose. More and more patients choose rhinoplasty to improve their functions and live better.
Overall, rhinoplasty is a fascinating combination of art, medical science, and surgical skill, offering both beauty and functional benefits!
