It appears the recession is continuing to hit the cosmetic surgery industry in the United States, according to new data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for plastic surgery done in the US last year.
Data for 2008 saw a 9% drop in cosmetic procedures, and while the decline has leveled off, this year saw a further 1% drop. Despite this, the US still is well ahead of the UK regarding the treatments carried out.
Several surgical treatments have bucked the trend, including lip surgery, upper arm lifts, and calf augmentations, which are increasingly popular with women. Meanwhile, breast implants dropped a whopping 83% in 2009. This may be due to the recession, but cosmetic surgery for men is down just 2% year over year. Maybe the ideal American male body is changing?
