NEW YORK, NY–(Marketwired – Apr 29, 2015) – Although many people think abdominoplasty Surgery as a procedure to get rid of fat in the stomach area is a common misconception, says Manhattan plastic surgeon Daniel Y. Maman, MD. In fact, he explains, tummy tuck surgery should be considered skin surgery, as it’s intended to help patients achieve a more tailored, firmer appearance in the abdominal area by tightening muscles and removing excess skin. .
“With this in mind,” Dr. Maman writes in a recent blog post, “ideal candidates are individuals who are not necessarily overweight, but rather those who are lean, fit, or very close to their desired weight whose biggest problem is loose and/or excess skin that proves unresponsive to both diet and exercise.” He goes on to note that candidates for abdominoplasty surgery — which is medically referred to as a tummy tuck — can also involve people whose abdominal wall is stretched after having children and/or losing significant weight.
In 740 Aesthetics, Dr. Maman and his colleague, Dr. Stafford R. Broumand, offer abdominoplasty candidates a unique approach to abdominoplasty that can be tailored to each individual’s unique needs. According to Dr. Broumand, people considering a tummy tuck have traditionally had two options: a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck. As a more extensive procedure, a full abdominoplasty generally targets the area that stretches from the pubic region to the chest, he explains. In addition to cutting away the skin and tightening the abdominal muscles, this approach often involves using liposuction to remove excess fat and achieve a better contour. In contrast, he continues, a mini tummy tuck typically covers only the lower abdomen and is more often used for people who have less excess skin and/or fat.
While both abdominoplasty methods can be very effective for the right patient, Dr. Broumand says he and Dr. Maman have found that most people fall somewhere in between needing a mini or full tummy tuck. For this reason, they have developed what they refer to as a “modified abdominoplasty,” which incorporates various aspects of both techniques. “Using a relatively smaller incision, modified abdominoplasty involves tightening the abdominal muscles from the rib cage to the pubic area, as well as removing excess skin in the lower abdomen,” explains Dr. Broumand in another recent blog post. He goes on to add that liposuction can also be used to remove fat and get an improved contour — particularly around the hips — and an innovative post-surgery pain reliever called EXPAREL® can be used to reduce potential discomfort and help speed it up tummy tuck recovery edit, process.
In the end, the two New York plastic surgeons say that tummy tuck surgery can be a great cosmetic option for the right candidates, although not every technique is for everyone. “When considering a tummy tuck,” notes Dr. Maman, “do your research, find out if your prospective surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and make sure he can customize the procedure based on your specific needs and goals . “
