Forget coastal modern: this bold red house has its own style, inspired by the flamboyant tastes of its French owners.
Francis and Michele Errera designed and built the Red Retreat 20 years ago, bringing the flavors of their native Bordeaux to the incredible headland position with ocean views from Burleigh to Coolangatta.
Known simply as “the red house,” this original beachfront property has become a local icon and is attracting a lot of attention since hitting the market as the Erreras prepare to downsize.
The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home in 1 Kelly Avenue, Miami is listed with Michael Kollosche and Matthew Follent, of Kollosche, and will be auctioned on May 17.
Mr Errera said he obtained the 405m² property in 2004, two years after he migrated to Australia, attracted by the plot’s rare 40m beach frontage.
Ms. Errera drew on her background in design and art history to reconstruct the original brown brick house, incorporating French and Asian influences on a two-story plan capturing views from nearly every room .

“We love the color red,” Mr. Errera said.
“First of all, I’m from Bordeaux, which is the red wine capital of the world. Moreover, we have lived in Asia, Hong Kong and China for many years, and in China, the color red and the number eight are very important. They are synonymous with success and long life.
The house has long stopped passersby in their tracks with its crimson exterior, complete with ornamental flourishes and the owners’ initials.
But the interiors fit the coastal setting timelessly, with high ceilings and blond-toned woodwork.
Feng Shui elements were used throughout expansive upstairs living spaces lined with black and Tasmanian oaks, leading to an open-air terrace that can accommodate large gatherings.
There is also an indoor entertainment lounge with a bar on the ground floor, opening onto the heated saltwater pool and patio.
Mr Errera said the protected coastal position provided direct access to North Burleigh’s famous surfing beach and surrounding parkland, walking and running tracks, while shops, cafes and restaurants were just a stone’s throw away. a few minutes walk.
Mr Follent said the announcement had generated a lot of interest, with curious locals and other agents among a crowd keen to see the inside of the unique home for the first time.
“It’s an iconic Gold Coast home and it’s definitely different from the typical beachfront home you might expect to see. As such, we noticed a lot of people walking past and stopping to take a look or ask the homeowner when the next home inspection is,” Follent said.
“But given that it is also such a well-located corner building with a very rare 40m frontage, there is certainly potential for redevelopment and there has been a real mix of interests. “
He said the property had been immaculately maintained and could also serve a new owner as a beautiful family home or an enviable plot of land for a small to medium scale development.
PropTrack data shows that Miami home prices increased 4.3% over the past 12 months to a median of $1.46 million.
