Singer JoJo has revealed that she had complications with her lip filler which forced her to scrap the injections.
The 32-year-old pop star, known professionally as “JoJo,” shared in a TikTok video this week that she tossed out her lip liner three months ago because it had started to “migrate” involuntarily.
“A few months ago, maybe three months ago, right before I came to New York, my lip filler fell apart because it was starting to migrate. I didn’t know he could do that,” he said. “I thought it would just metabolise and dissolve. I thought it would go away with time, you know?’
The “Too Little, Too Late” singer pointed to the bottom of her upper lip, saying, “It got, like, a lump underneath. I’d run my tongue along it and be like, ‘What’s going on?'”
While the Aquamarine The star was “really happy” she decided to ditch her lip filler, admitting she’s “not crazy” for experimenting with the cosmetic procedure.
“I’m really happy with how it looks because that’s kind of natural — I still have small lips — but it’s my face, it’s me,” JoJo said. “I’m also not crazy about experimenting with it. I was weird and I liked it for a while and then when I didn’t like it, luckily, it was something I was able to go back to and look like my natural self.”
In her video, the “Leave” singer also asked fellow TikTokers if they’ve ever had their own lip fillers migrate. Lip filler migration occurs when the dermal filler injected into the lip begins to move to areas other than the intended injection site. Migrated filler can create noticeable lumps or bulk above the upper lip, causing the lips to appear swollen or unnatural.
Talking to you The independent, Dr. Joshua Zeichner — a dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital — said that, in some cases, migration of lip fillers is actually quite common. “This is not unusual in the lip area as there is so much movement of the lips and the filler can get caught or displaced by the muscles around the mouth,” she told us. “Usually migration involves the filler moving from the pink part of your lips to the skin around the lips, with a loss of lip contour structure.”
There are many causes of lip filler migration, including the injection method, the type of filler used, or taking too much filler. The best defense against filler migration is to see a trusted professional who is well trained in administering cosmetic injections.
“Your doctor’s injection technique can help minimize migration, so be sure to see a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon experienced in lip injections,” Dr. Zeichner said. “The good news is that if hyaluronic acid filler is used in the lips, which most doctors use, an enzyme can be injected to dissolve the migrated filler. Even the best artist needs an eraser every now and then.”
Because injectable fillers are only semi-permanent, they can last anywhere three to 18 months. However, if the fillers start to migrate, a professional can inject hyaluronidase – a synthetic form of an enzyme already present in the body – to break down hyaluronic acid fillers.
In the comments, a fan asked JoJo if it hurt to have her lips parted. “It hurt! But the nurse who did it used numbing cream and froze it so it wasn’t too bad! I was more scared than I really should have been,” he replied.
Many fans also applauded JoJo for being “transparent” about her plastic surgery, while others praised her natural appearance.
“They look amazing and so natural now!” wrote a TikToker.
“Love your transparency,” said another.
“We are humans. We are changing,” commented a third. “I’m glad you were able to have the experience but also change it again. You girl!”
JoJo isn’t the only celebrity to come clean about dissing lip fillers or cosmetic injections. Model Blac Chyna recently documented her “life-changing” journey to reduce breast and butt implants, as well as dissolve her facial fillers. The mother-of-two, whose real name is Angela Renée White, said her decision to undo years of plastic surgery is part of her journey to “get back to Angela”.
The 34-year-old model later revealed that she had illegal silicone injections in her butt at the age of 19, which she said put her life at risk because the procedure was not done by a licensed professional.
Meanwhile, Love Island stars Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Molly-Mae Hague have previously spoken about disbanding their fillers. Supermodel Bella Hadid has also admitted she regrets getting a nose job at 14, while Linda Evangelista is suing Zelta Aesthetics over a fat-freezing treatment she claims left her “permanently disfigured”.
