From the cherry lips to the bow of the Cupid, the lips were never warmer. This is, in part, in Tiktok, where individuals – especially women – who have undergone lip filling procedures present “before” and “after”.
Since 2015, Lip Filler has come back in style, partly grace Kylie Jenner’s influence. Its opening to get the process opened the eyes of many, increasing the buzz to social media for dermatologists.
In 2023, over 1.4 million People in the US have chosen to take the rim of filling, a process that people are undergoing their lips in the style of their choice, according to the US Society of Plastic Surgeons. The size of the world market for lip filling processes is appreciated to grow from about $ 518 million in $ 2024 to $ 738 million by 2034, according to Yahoo Finance.
The filling lip usually involves adding volume to certain parts of the lips to make them appear more fully and more young. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of lips filling for people over 21 years of age.
A wide range of patients seek treatment. They may search to correct lips asymmetries, reduce wrinkles, define the shape of the lips, or add natural fullness to their lips.
“They can be used very simply to add a little volume lost with aging,” said Dr. Ivona Percec, MD, Ph.D., Deputy Director of Cosmetics Surgery at Penn Medicine. “Or, they can be used at another end, where they are applied to redefine and reconstruct almost the entire lip complex.”
The process usually takes no more than two hours. First, trained professional numbness lips use an anesthetic. A syringe is then used to infusion of the lips, which usually contains hyaluronic acid, in the parts of the lips that the patient wants to be strengthened. The side effects are bruising and edema for a few weeks.
Vanessa Eidenberg, a senior health science employee at Drexel University, opted for Restylane Kysse. Restylane Kysse is a complete gel consisting of hyaluronic acid to add tumor and create a smoother lip. This type of filling aims to give a more natural lip effect with minimal side effects.
“Personally I like the biggest lips to myself,” Eidenberg said. “I think it makes my face look more uniform.”
Eidenberg had done the process that was done last summer by a dermatologist in the king of Prussia. This process was actually a repair for a process that fell six months ago, when a professional doctor put the mistake of filling.
On average, patients usually maintain an appearance every four to six months. Sometimes the filler can last up to 18 months. However, it depends on how quickly a person’s metabolism destroys hyaluronic acid.
Complete rim is not cheap, but it is also not the most expensive of cosmetic procedures. In 2023, the average cost of the fees of surgeon/physician to increase the lips with injectable materials was about $ 698.
Social media is definitely a factor in rising the process, along with the influence of peers. Eidenberg said he got a restylane Kysse after her friends.
For Phyllis Anastasio, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, this is exactly how everything works.
“I think the root of social media influence begins there, is that an incredibly intense need to feel like we are acceptable or to belong,” Anastasio said.
Anastasio said that all ages are in social media and all ages are affected when it comes to drawing processes such as Lip Filler.
“Honestly, I see social media and many women who are middle -aged and older who have done this,” Anastasio said.
Percec said the filling lips follow the trends and styles popular in the social media and that the current trend is for the two lips to have an equal volume.
“Usually, the natural ideal outline of the lips is a 40-60 ratio, with the upper lip being 40% of the volume of the lower lip,” Percec said. “But now, we look at the idealized appearances where it’s about 50-50, so the upper lip is the same as the lower lip. This is something that was more desirable in the last decade.”
Percec also said it has seen an increase in people’s transsexuals “looking for lip cure to confirm gender”.
As with any process, there are risks, Percec said.
“There are always concerns when you enter something into your body – bleeding, infection, asymmetry. There are always nodule growth risks,” Percec said. “You can also injure an artery with the involuntary injection of a small product there, which can cause tissue necrosis.”
Eidenberg finally said she was happy with her choice and plans to get in the future.
